Puerto Rey

PUERTO REY

The resort Puerto Rey is at the east coast of Almería. It is located next to the mouth of the Antas River. It is big and has all the conveniences. In the development of Puerto del Rey, you will frequently see politicians in the summer. Together with the Playazo beach, both form the greatest expanse of beach in almería. The beach stretches approximately 7 kilometres, from just south of Villaricos down through naturism zone, and on to Puerto Rey and Garrucha. The beach of Puerto del Rey alone covers half the coastline of the town.

The beach “Playazo de Vera” is one of the oldest and longest beaches in Spain. The exclusive use of naturism goes over a length of two kilometres and changes then slowly into textile (where Puerto Rey is).

In April, when the temperature rises, it is possible to enjoy a relaxing sun bath on the beach, and you can do it until the end of October! We dare to say that our summer lasts for seven month. On the wide natural beach you find fine sandy parts, and pebble beside the shore, ideal for a barefoot walk ashore. It doesn't matter if you want to chear up after breakfast or open up your appetite before dinner in the afternoon sun, you will always be in good company. But if you want to walk on a nearly lonely beach, to enjoy the natural impression, then you must go early in the morning or at the time of sunset. Showers and toilets ensure the sanitary support and during high season life guards watch over the security.
In a quiet area, there are also private tennis courts, and a swimming pool for the neighbourhood (about ten houses). Besides this swimming pool, there is another one for Puerto Rey's neighbourhood, bigger than the other, but there are usually too much people there, so I prefer our pool. Also for the neighbourhood, there is some tennis courts (we will leave rackets and balls in case you want to play tennis). There are also a lot of golf courts. All these places are together (2 min. on foot).

CLUB DEPORTIVO PUERTO REY (SPORT CENTRE)

SHOPS

LA ESQUINA DE PUERTO REY is a Shopping Centre next to home (100 metres or less) where you can find a supermarket, a bakery, a cyber cafe http, some bars, shops, etc. The supermarket (and also the other shops) opens from 10,00 to 14,00 and from 17,00 to 21,00. The supermarket and the bakery open also on Sunday morning. There is another supermarket that is cheaper than this one, but you have to go by car, it's 5 minutes far from home. It is called MERCADONA. I would leave a lot of maps at home so you can find everything easily.

THE SORROUNDINGS

The resort Puerto Rey has an exceptional magnificent landscape. Not only within their big nature reserve you will find a large selection of native fauna and flora, outside, the Andalusia garden will offer you delicious fruit and exquisite wine to spoil the palate of everybody. A large history with magnificent monuments and archeological relics of the past awaits you. From a large selection of destinations we have chosen some for you.

VERA

Vera´s Aquatic Park, (5 min. on foot)

Founded in the 6th century BC by the Carthaginians, this town has passed through the hands of almost all the settlers that came to the peninsular: the Romans took over from the Carthaginians in exploiting the mines, and called the place Barea. In the 17C, under Muslim rule and given the lack of safety along the coast, the town was moved inland. It was finally reconquered by the Catholic Kings in 1488, although its site was changed in 1518.
With all this historic tradition, it is not surprising that Vera possesses a rich historic heritage, fruit of its past activities. This characteristic is also reflected in its varied gastronomy, which has in part been recovered from the former settlers: ajo colorao (red garlic), caldo colorao (red broth), olla de trigo (pot of wheat) gurullos con conejo (lumps with rabbit) fritada de emperador (fried swordfish) tortas de panizo (maize cakes) Are just some of the typical dishes that can be tasted here.
Another of the characteristics of Vera is its craftsmanship, where it is noted for its la "Jarra trampa" or trick pitcher with four fake spouts and five peaks at the top.
This all makes Vera a tourist spot of great interest, where visitors can enjoy all its natural resources, which are unique in the European continent, as well as its historic heritage and rich gastronomy.
On Saturday morning, you will find a wide variety of fruit and vegetables in VERA market (8 minutes far from Puerto Rey). Too much people in summer, but it's much more cheaper to buy it there, and the quality is excellent. It's better for you to go early, there is not too much people at 8,00 or 9,00 am, and you will find everything easily. And you can buy the best fish in Spain in a market place in Vera. The fish you find in Vera is from GARRUCHA (5 minutes far from Puerto Rey).

GARRUCHA

The town of Garrucha has a wide selection of restaurants and bars to indulge in its excellent seafood. Restaurants found along the seafront serve the freshest catch of the day. Such establishments are regularly supplied with fresh fish from the nearby port. At dawn, the marina is a sight to behold where one will experience the typically Mediterranean sight -- a flotilla of small fishing boats setting out to sea. Later in the afternoon, the fishermen stage a daily fish auction.
With much of the original charm intact that made it flourish in the first place, Garrucha comes as a beautiful and lively fishing town. In the most recent years, it has now assumed the role of popular tourist destination, on the premise of the slogan "Garrucha, Sun and Seafood." Synonymous with the town really is its famed quality large red prawns, fished only from Garrucha's waters. In turn, Garrucha has always taken advantage of its thriving fishing industry, its main source of income. To complement this, a large port for both commercial and leisure pursuits has been built. As much as it is known for its sumptuous seafood, Garrucha is well renowned for its sparkling golden sandy beaches, which runs for several kilometers along the Costa Almeria. The beach just fronting the town center is the only beach in town labeled with the prestigious Blue flag. Further down Garrucha, there are also other alternative choices among a series of superb recently developed beaches, covering approximately 8 km.
In July, there’s a summer fair in GARRUCHA , there are lots of rides. There are also hippie stands where you can buy all sort of things: necklaces, earrings, cheap handbags…
